History of St Patrick
The exact dates of St Patrick’s life are unknown. However it has been estimated that he was born in England in the late 4th Century to a wealthy Romano-British family. His father was a decurion, a powerful local politician, and also a deacon in the Christian church.
According to legend, St Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was sixteen and taken as a slave to Ireland. He then spent six years in captivity during which time he discovered God. God told Patrick to flee to the coast, where a ship would be waiting to take him home. After arriving back in England, Patrick started on the journey to become a priest. Prior to being ordained Patrick had a vision that he would become “The Voice of the Irish”.
Acting on his vision, Patrick returned to Ireland a few years later to convert the pagan Irish to Christianity. Legend also states that he chased the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea after they attacked him during a 40-day fast!
It is believed that Patrick died on 17 March and the Church started to celebrate that date as his Feast Day from the early 17th Century. This day is also known as Saint Patrick’s Day!
Today St Patrick’s Day is celebrated not only in Ireland but also in many of the countries that Irish emigrants travelled including the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. During the festival it is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or green accessories.
The largest St Patrick’s Day Parade in the world takes place in New York City, which attracts about 150,00 marchers every year. More information on the NYC St Patrick’s Day Parade can be found here.
