THE LEGEND OF THE UNICORN

I’m sure all of us agree that unicorns are super cute, magical and mysterious creatures. I always think of these wonderful mythological animals looking like a white horse with a single horn on its forehead!

But did you know that the legend of the unicorn first appeared over 2,500 years ago in early Mesopotamian artwork? It also appears in the ancient myths of India and China. Some have even suggested that a Palaeolithic caveman painted a unicorn in the Lascaux cave complex in France some 17,000 years ago!

The earliest description in Greek literature of a single-horned unicorn-like animal was by the historian Ctesias about 400 BC. He described an Indian wild ass that was the size of a horse, with a white body, purple head, blue eyes and on its forehead was an 18-inch horn coloured red at the pointed tip, black in the middle with a white base. A very colorful beast!

Ctesias also wrote that those who drank from its horn were protected from stomach trouble, epilepsy and poison. He also mentioned that it was very fleet of foot and difficult to capture. It’s likely that this description was of the Indian rhinoceros!
