So we recently got into crochet and already learnt the basics. That said, I wanted to go a step further and start making those adorable crochet animals and crochet amigurumis. So I ventured out and took a look at what Beginner Crochet Books are out there on the market. Now, I think the first thing to say, which is really important, it is actually quite hard to learn how to crochet from JUST a book, it is useful to have a few in person lessons and if that isn’t possible, definitely watch some beginner crochet videos on YouTube. The key to crochet is to start with a good tension (ie learn how to hold the yarn and crochet hook) followed by practicing making a crochet chain. After following a long a few Crochet Along Videos, you should also get the hang of how to read a crochet pattern! I would say those are the main stumbling blocks for beginners.

Anyway, we are here to discover what would be a great new crochet book to buy either for yourself or for someone you know, who is into Amigurumi Crochet Patterns. And I have just the book for you: The Big Book of Beginner Amigurumi!
Why do I like this book? Here are my main reasons:
Review of all the basic stitches:
- It has a section at the front where it goes over all the main stitches again – so you can refresh yourself to understand how to do certain things! There some lovely clear photos here
The projects are built up in order of difficulty
- Each chapter has a super cute theme (eg food/ farm etc) and each chapter starts with the easiest projects and guides you through to slightly more challenging projects
- Ending in the doll’s section which is ADORABLE, but also requires the most skill. But by the time you have worked yourself through the book, you should be ready for these
Use what you have
- I love that the projects are all made using regular, inexpensenive DK or light worsted weight yarn. BUT it also shows us how some of the projects look in super plush yarn, for those of you who want to make those wonderful Crochet Plushies that you see all over instagram and tik tok.
