The Mystery of the Easter Bunny
The Christian holiday of Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. The modern tradition includes the giving of chocolate eggs that are delivered by the Easter bunny. The origins of the Easter bunny is a mystery but likely comes from early Christian symbology!
Eggs symbolized rebirth in early Christianity and became associated with Easter in medieval times because people were not allowed to eat them during Lent, the fast leading up to Easter. Legend has it that children in medieval England went door-to-door begging for eggs on the Saturday before Lent as a special treat before starting the Lent fast.
Imagery of rabbits and hares were also popular in medieval religious art when people believed that that hares were hermaphrodite, meaning that they could reproduce asexually. This led to an association of hares with the Virgin Mary.
The tradition of the egg-giving bunny arrived in the U.S. in the 18th century with the arrival of Protestant German immigrants in Pennsylvania. The “Osterhase” or Eater hare would leave good children a gift of colored eggs in nests made from their bonnets or caps on Easter morning.
